March 28 - 30, 2008 ,
6:00 p.m. (F) - 1:00 p.m. (Sun)
Dickinson College, Carlisle, PA
For faculty members, leaders of study-abroad programs, instructional technologists, and librarians interested in exploring how emerging interactive technologies can be used to extend and deepen international learning experiences and more fully integrate those experiences with the broader learning program on campus. (7 program units. Liaisons' deadline:November 1, 2007)
Engagement as a teacher or facilitator of study abroad and awareness of emerging technologies (those sometimes referred to collectively as "Web 2.0") will be useful for participation.
Study-abroad programs have expanded and taken on heightened significance in an era of increasing globalization. At the same time, ready and ubiquitous access to electronic communication has transformed the study-abroad experience. The ability to interact instantaneously, from anywhere, with peers in any other location enables students abroad and their peers, faculty members, and academic support staff on campus to share, extend, and deepen international learning experiences.
In this conference, participants will consider how technology can be used not only to connect the study-abroad experience to the home campus while it is happening, but also to help students prepare effectively for and follow up on the experience of international study and travel. Participants will consider the how Web 2.0 and interactive social software such as blogs, wikis, and online games can be deployed to enrich the study-abroad experience. While faculty and staff engaged with language instruction will find this conference particularly relevant, those involved with study abroad in English-speaking countries (in fields such as anthropology, literature, and history) will also benefit from participation. Upon return to campus, participants will have greater familiarity with one or more Web 2.0 technologies such as blogs, wikis, and gaming and how to use such technologies to enhance the study-abroad experience.
