Alex builds bridges and networks between participating campuses and individuals. He attends NITLE's relationships with our participating colleges and partner organizations and builds new relationships with interested organizations and campuses. He works directly with our network of campus liaisons and advisory councils, communicating and meeting with them on a regular basis. He serves as a first point of contact for inquiries and expressions of interest from participating colleges. In addition, he advises senior staff regarding the needs and interests of participating colleges and the usefulness of NITLE services and programs to them.
NITLE's Participant Relations Manager, Alex holds the Austrian Matura and an A.B. in Sociology from The Honors College of Western Michigan University. He earned his Ph.D. in Sociology--influenced by philosophy, psychoanalysis and history--from Boston College. He served as faculty in Sociology at Drake University and at Grinnell College, with most of his courses cross-listed with Gender and Women’s Studies or Cultural Studies. He was part of Boston College's Office of Information Technology when the campus first became wired and connected to the Internet. Alex helped create the Midwest Instructional Technology Center as its Associate Director. In 2004, he was a Frye Leadership Institute fellow.
Alex lives in and works from Des Moines, Iowa, with his wife, a sociologist at Drake University. His daughter graduated from Macalester College in 2006. He enjoys cheese with bite and bread with crust; hopes to break three hours in the marathon; and drives (autocross, track days, time trials).
